TARGET AUDIENCE
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians specializing in the area of infectious disease and other healthcare professionals who manage patients with CABP and ABSSSI.

STATEMENT OF NEED
Community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP) and acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI) are two of the most common and serious infections requiring hospital admission. Management of these infections is often complicated by the fact that hospitalized patients are often elderly, and have multiple comorbidities.

To meet quality standards that ensure optimal patient outcomes, to maximize reimbursement, and to reduce future antibiotic resistance, clinicians must select the most effective empiric antibiotic regimen–which includes finding a role for newer agents that may offer certain advantages based on their profile. Infectious disease specialists should take a leadership role within their institutions to ensure optimal management of CABP and ABSSSI by serving as consultants and educators to other healthcare professionals, and by developing and implementing clinical practice standards and guidelines.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
Upon proper completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Apply current clinical evidence to the appropriate management of patients with ABSSSI.
  • Apply current clinical evidence to the appropriate management of patients with CABP.
  • Demonstrate leadership to ensure integration of established and newer antimicrobial agents into the clinical care of patients with ABSSSI and CABP based on the principles of antimicrobial stewardship.
