TARGET AUDIENCE
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of gastroenterologists, internists, primary care physicians, and other allied healthcare professionals who treat patients with IBS, IBS-C, and CC.
STATEMENT OF NEED
Irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) and chronic constipation (CC) are extremely common conditions that often result in a substantial decrease in health-related quality of life. Frequently disabling, both conditions can result in significant direct and indirect health care costs for afflicted individuals. Management of these disorders is often challenging, since few of the available pharmacologic or non-pharmacologic treatment options have been proven to be effective. However, due to recent insights into the underlying pathophysiology of IBS-C and CC, new agents with positive effects on both the peripheral and central components of the conditions are or will soon be available. Developing a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, and patient-centered treatment approach that includes appropriate use of these new agents is important to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
Upon proper completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Differentiate irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and subtypes from chronic constipation (CC) and from other medical conditions that present with similar symptoms using current evidence-based and cost-effective approaches.
- Discuss the efficacy and safety of novel agents for the treatment of IBS-C and CC, and how these agents fit into an individualized treatment approach.
- Describe strategies for improving communication and developing a coordinated approach for care of patients with IBS-C and CC among a multidisciplinary team of physicians and allied healthcare professionals.
